Driver hit in fatal crash charged with drunk driving

Serious injury and death often occur when two vehicles crash in a head-on collision. Many factors can contribute to accidents such as this in Tennessee. When drug usage or drunk driving are involved, a tragic situation becomes even more serious. A recent accident in Maryville claimed the life of two people and injured five others.

On Jan. 28, a 54-year-old man was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 411 in a pickup truck when he drove into the southbound lane. He crashed into a sports utility vehicle driven by a 21-year-old woman. A 49-year-old passenger of the pickup and a 28-year-old passenger of the SUV were both killed in the collision. The driver of both vehicles as well as a passenger of the pickup and two passengers of the SUV suffered injuries.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the pickup driver was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. He now faces numerous charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of vehicular assault and driving under the influence of drugs. Officers reported that the SUV driver was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on a DUI charge.
