Man accused of drunk driving identified

Police officers frequently question drivers during traffic stops in Tennessee. Many times, an observed or suspected traffic violation has warranted the stop. In some circumstances, however, a traffic stop may lead to more serious consequences. A Johnson City man involved in a recent traffic stop now faces charges of drunk driving and evading arrest, among other accusations.

Several calls were made to the Johnson City Police Department, reporting a presumed reckless driver. According to police, someone had been spotted driving recklessly in a nearby church parking lot and also attempting to hit an ATM at a financial institution. Police report that when officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, the driver apparently did not stop. Reports claim that the driver ignored police lights and sirens and began traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 26.

The driver reportedly forced other drivers off the road and nearly hit several vehicles while traveling at a high rate of speed. He then allegedly crashed into a fence in a nearby neighborhood. Police claim the car crashed into a barn after the driver had traveled through the backyards of some residences. Police say when they found the car at the barn, the driver was not in it.

Police apparently found the driver walking approximately one hour after the initial call about the incident occurred. The 32-year-old man faces multiple charges, including reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of meth and vandalism. He is being held at the Washington County Detention Center after being released from a local hospital for medical treatment.
