Tennessee round-up yields 34 arrested for drug charges

A small Tennessee town held a big round-up last week. Numerous law enforcement offices as well as the U.S. Postal Service worked together to conduct the arrests. A startling 34 arrests were made, which is quite impressive considering the town has a population of less than 6,000 individuals. The defendants were arrested on a variety of drug charges. 

The 34 arrests that were made were less than half of the over 70 cases the grand jury indicted. Several of the accused were reportedly already in custody for different charges either in a Tennessee county jail or in federal facilities. Those charged were linked to drug activity involving a variety of drugs including heroin, methamphetamine, pills, fentanyl-laced heroin and others.

Investigators had worked for over a year gathering information on illegal drug activity in the area. During the operation, police had collected information from a number of confidential sources that shed light on the dealings of known drug traffickers. A release by the district attorney general stated that much of the illegal drugs in the area come from other parts of the country as well as international locations. Prior to the passing of laws limiting the purchase of medications containing ephedrine, methamphetamine was often produced locally, but now much of it comes from outside sources.

Although the 34 defendants were taken into custody about the same time and for similar drug charges, they will each stand trial individually.
