The holiday season is often a time of hustle and bustle for Tennessee residents and others across the country. Parties and other gatherings are frequently on the calendars of many people for this time of year. Party attendees may choose to partake of alcoholic beverages during their celebrations. However, after the festivities are over, it is never a good idea to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Law enforcement officials in the state have announced plans to crack down on drunk driving through the end of December.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed a program called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Booze It or Lose It is a statewide effort by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office. Many counties throughout Tennessee are partnering with the state agency to conduct their own campaign during December.
Police departments typically increase the number of patrols during the holidays. Their goal is to also increase the visibility of checkpoints and enforcement so as to decrease the incidents of accidents, injuries and deaths related to drunk driving. In Dec. 2016, over 500 alcohol-related incidents occurred. The efforts in Tennessee and throughout the nation are designed to increase safety on their roadways.
A drunk driving charge in the state of Tennessee can result in serious consequences for an individual, if convicted. Penalties could include loss of license, fines, ignition locks on vehicles or jail time. Those facing such charges should seek the guidance of a knowledgeable criminal defense attorney. An experienced lawyer will thoroughly review the situation, including any evidence that has been gathered. A strong defense can help minimize the negative impact on a client's life.
